Living Hour returns to Ottawa from Winnipeg, supported by Corascene and Mairi at FONO. Presented by Congrego.

Join us to experience Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear on FONO's immersive HiFi system at 8pm, no cover.

We’re dropping the needle on one of the defining records of 2000s experimental pop.
Released in 2009, Grizzly Bear’s masterpiece Veckatimest stands as a defining pinnacle of the late-2000s Brooklyn indie-rock explosion. Named after a remote, uninhabited island off Cape Cod, the record propelled the band from underground darlings into international critical heavyweights.
Musically, the album is a breathtaking display of chamber-pop craft, blending lush choral harmonies with intricate, finger-picked guitars, woodwinds, and orchestral arrangements. Anchored by the unstoppable, piano-driven bounce of "Two Weeks" alongside sprawling, artfully layered tracks like "While You Wait for the Others" and "Ready, Able," Veckatimest is both meticulously detailed and richly melodic. Join us to experience this modern indie landmark front-to-back on a pristine sound system.
We’re playing it front to back, loud and in full.

Cairo electronic fixture 3Phaz makes his Ottawa live debut on October 17 at FONO with experimental Egyptian mahraganat/shaabi, supported by deep-listening duo SUBR صبر.
.png)
On October 17 at FONO, Cairo electronic music fixture 3Phaz brings his experimental bass-driven take on Egyptian mahraganat/shaabi for an Ottawa debut live performance, supported by SUBR صبر, the deep-listening project of Lougien Dawoudiah and Pierre Richardson –– moving between experimental club and deep listening, deep bass and drone, finding each other in sonic experimentation.
3Phaz is a Cairo-based electronic producer mostly known for his debut album ‘Three Phase,’ an album that presented a powerful and fresh new take on Egyptian mahraganat/shaabi sound; the record was released on Egyptian label 100Copies in 2020. With further singles and remixes released on the likes of Rinse, Boomkat, Polaar, Nashazphone, and Irsh, 3Phaz quickly carved his way into the international club music scene allowing him to perform all around Europe. 3Phaz’s sophomore album ‘Ends Meet’ was released in Feb 2023 on Discrepant sub-label Souk followed by his EP ‘DramTraTrax’ released on Tratratrax in May 2023, both of which were featured in multiple end of year lists including Pitchfork, The Quietus, and Bandcamp to name a few.
SUBR صبر is a deep listening music project by artist duo: Lougien Dawoudiah and Pierre Richardson. Through a web of re-mapped DJ controllers and modular synthesizers, SUBR shares their study into the world of Arab sounds.
The name SUBR (صبر) is based on the Arabic word "sabir" meaning patience, persistence. The same word also means “cactus”. Resilient, thorny. Sometimes it flowers, sometimes it bears fruit. The prickly pears it produces are a signature offering of Palestinian land, and the plant has become a symbol of protection and boundary.
SUBR’s performances distill arabic music, media, and field recordings down to their bare elements, turning the sounds to instruments themselves, and playing them to compliment a background of deep drone.

Abenaki multi-instrumentalist Mali Obomsawin celebrates the release of her new album 'Automatic' along with local percussion duo Main Arteries.
.png)
On October 29, Abenaki multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Mali Obomsawin comes to FONO for an Ottawa release show celebrating her new album, Automatic. Moving between experimental music and free jazz, Automatic is the result of Obomsawin’s exploration of Abenaki language ethnological recordings made in the mid-1900s, and her intention to reclaim the ancestral material from the outsiders who seized it. “Behind Automatic is a deep awareness about institutions’ predatory relationship with Native material,” Obomsawin explains. “I wanted to make a record that institutions couldn’t own.” (via Various Small Flames)
Opening the evening is Main Arteries, a new project from prolific local drum improvisers Olivier Fairfield and Scott Warren combining acoustic percussion, tape loops and synthetic textures.
Mali Obomsawin (Abenaki Nation, Odanak) is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer known for her solo work and her rock band Deerlady. She is based in New York City and Odanak, Quebec.
Mali’s albums Sweet Tooth (2022) and Greatest Hits (released as ‘Deerlady’ in 2024) have garnered critical acclaim from Stereogum, KEXP, NPR, and The Guardian. Her projects have brought her to Big Ears and Montreal Jazz Festivals, and earned her a name across experimental, free-jazz and rock scenes. Mali’s music has been featured in the Hulu FX series Reservation Dogs (2023) and is also part of an unsanctioned exhibition at the MET titled: "ENCODED: Change the Story, Change the Future." Encoded features 17 Native artists and won two 2025 Webby Awards.
Mali scored the film “Sugarcane” (2025) , which was nominated for the Academy Awards’ Best Documentary Feature. Her work was nominated for Best Original Score by the International Documentary Association and Cinema Eye Honors.
Combining acoustic percussion, tape loops, and synthetic textures, Main Arteries (Olivier Fairfield & Scott Warren) shapes soundscapes driven by the fractured legacy of the mid-20th-century Gréber Plan —a failed utopian vision for the design of Canada’s Capital Region by French urban planner Jacques Gréber.

Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marc McLaughlin crafts emotionally direct, genre-blending folk-pop songs.
.png)
Marc McLaughlin is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Canada’s East Coast, writing hushed, emotionally direct songs that fall somewhere between lo-fi folk and left-field pop. Carried by a soft voice at unhurried tempos, McLaughlin’s work blurs the line between acoustic confession and electronic experimentation.
Since the 2025 release of his EP All I Can Say, he has toured across Canada, the UK, and Europe and shared stages with artists such as Dan Mangan, Kelly McMichael, and By Divine Right. His live performances balance a dry wit with tender explorations of the human condition.
